Frequently Asked Questions
How many photos can I use?
You can use as few items as you wish. To avoid the montage looking "crowded",
it is best to limit the number of photos and items used to 40.
Can I use items other than photographs?
Items other than photographs can be used to create the montage. This includes newpaper articles and pictures, invitations, programs, medals, etc.
Do I need to tell you who is in the photos?
Keep in mind that the more information we have, the better job we can do. Making notes in pencil or on post-it notes on the backs of photos helps us to identify who is who.
Can the sizes of the photos be changed?
Yes - the sizes of the original photos almost always change. A wallet-size can be made much larger or an 8x10 reduced. You can let us know if there are specific photos you'd like to have smaller or larger.
Is there a center photo to the montage?
You will notice on the samples that there is generally one photo that serves as the focal point of the montage, and two or three others that are also larger. Feel free to mark which photos you would like to use for these. Individual photos or photos of two or three people work best; group photos do not work
well when made extremely large.
What if my photos are faded and torn?
Faded and scratched photos can often be significantly improved before they
are added to the montage, so do not be afraid to include them. See the Restoration page for details.
Will my photos be harmed in any way?
When we are finished creating your montage, all of your photos and items will be returned to you undamaged. Originals reproduce much better than copies do, so please send originals if possible.
How do I get my photos to you?
Photos can be dropped off or mailed. If you choose not to send us your original photos, they can also be e-mailed, or sent on a cd. To maximize the clarity of
the photos, each photo should be scanned in and sent in .tiff or .pdf format with a resolution (dpi) of 300. If you are unable to do this yourself at home, you may be able to find a priting shop or photo lab that can help you. You will find more information about sending photos on our Instructions page.
What is the montage printed on?
All printing will be done on high-quality photographic film that will resist
fading over time.
Can I have writing on my montage?
It is possible to print text on the montage. Simply let us know when sending
your photos what you would like.
Can I tell you where I want photos placed?
We will do our best to accomodate any requests you may have regarding the size or placement of specific photos, but please keep in mind that this is an artistic process. Some photos do not work well large, and some photos do not blend well together. If you have access to e-mail, we can send a small proof to you for approval before printing your montage.
What size will my montage be?
We generally create montages in the sizes listed on the Pricing page. We can, however, create the original montage in any size you'd like if you let us know ahead of time.
Can my montage be vertical?
Montages are usually created in a horizontal format. It may be possible to create yours vertically. Please ask us ahead of time.
How long will it take to receive my completed montage?
It takes approximately two weeks to create your montage. It will be shipped
to you following your approval.
Can I order more copies later?
We keep every montage on file for at least two years. Additional copies can be ordered at any time.
Do you offer framing?
We do offer limited framing. Due to the high cost of shipping frames, framing is
available only for montages being picked up from us. Simply ask us about it when
ordering your montage.
Can you ship the montage to me?
Yes, we will ship all montages with an added charge of $10 unless you arrange
to pick it up from us.
How can I pay for my montage?
We accept cash, check, Visa, MasterCard, and American Express. When paying
by check, please make it payable to Memory Lane Montages, LLC.
